Global Issues Section
Overview
The U.S. Embassy in The Hague is one of the few US Missions with a separate section focused exclusively on global issues. The Section has primary responsibility for counterterrorism (CT), narcotics, law enforcement, trafficking in persons (TIP), labor, population and migration, environment, science and technology (EST), health, and women’s and social issues. The Section coordinates bilateral counterterrorism and law enforcement efforts by the Embassy, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice, FBI and the Department of State.
The Section works closely with the Dutch Justice, Foreign Affairs, Interior, Health, Finance (Customs and Port of Rotterdam), Environment and Transport Ministries as well as with parliamentary officials, businesses and NGOs.
Three of the Mission’s 7 MPP goals fall within Global’s purview (CT, Homeland Security and International Crime & Drugs). The Section supports the advanced technology aspect of the MPP Economic goal as well. Currently, the Section puts out a daily press review of global and economic issues. It prepares the annual TIP, narcotics and CT reports and the biennial labor trends report. It also contributes to substantial portions of the annual human rights report.
