April 20 - Counselor for Public Affairs Julie Moyes attended the dress rehearsal of the Watt Vies! team presentation that students from the Maerlant Lyceum in The Hague will give at the Food Factor World Festival in St. Louis. The presentation focused on allergies, what causes them and how to treat them.

“Peace Unveiled” Screening Highlights Plight of Afghan Women
April 11 - The U.S. Embassy and the John Adams Institute screened award-winning PBS documentary “Peace Unveiled” on April 11 at the Lux Theater in Nijmegen. The film follows the plight of three Afghan women who are fighting to ensure the protection of women’s rights in any negotiated peace agreement.

Chargé d’Affaires Edwin Nolan Hosts Smarter Cities Dinner
February 7 - Chargé d’Affaires Edwin Nolan hosted and co-moderated a Smarter Cities dinner together with the Mayor Jorritsma of Almere. Also present were seven mayors of Dutch cities, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, as well as several major U.S. technology companies and the President of the American Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands.

January 23 - Chargé Nolan spoke to an audience of over 500 guests at the AmCham’s 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner. Guests of honor were HRH Princess Máxima and Prime Minister Mark Rutte, and the host was the Mayor of The Hague, Jozias van Aartsen.

Chad Harbach: The Art of Fielding - John Adams Institute Lecture (video)
January 19 - Once in a great while, a debut novel appears that causes critics to declare an instant classic. Chad Harbach’s The Art of Fielding is such a book. The New York Times lists it as one of the 10 best books of 2011, and Amazon named it the best book of the year. It is set at a midwestern college, and it’s a story about baseball.

Leo Blokhuis: The Sound of the South - John Adams Institute Lecture (video)
January 18 - Leo Blokhuis is the Dutch “pop professor.” In his new book, The Sound of the South, he makes the case that in the early 60’s southern soul was influenced by country music, and vice versa. Join us for some groovin’ discussion of artists like Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, Elvis Presley and Etta James, followed by live music by Amsterdam band Check 1-2.
