United States Becomes Party to the Intercountry Adoption Convention
December 12, 2007 The Hague -- Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Maura Harty formally deposited the United States Instrument of Ratification for the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in respect of Intercountry Adoption. The brief ceremony was held at the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague on Wednesday, December 12. United States Ambassador Arnall served as the official witness in the ceremony.
This was the final procedural step for the United States to become a party to the Convention, effective April 2008, and completed the process which began in 1994.

Child Support Convention signed at the Peace Palace in The Hague
November 23, 2007 The United States became the first State to sign the new Hague Convention on the International Recovery of Child Support. The Convention establishes a comprehensive system of cooperation among child support authorities, and should result in more children receiving more support more quickly.

US Embassy Supports Diversity Initiative
November 7, 2007 APAO Marion Ekpuk highlighted diversity within the United States at the opening of the Black Magic Woman Festival, a week-long celebration of women’s contributions to the arts and music in Amsterdam.
The festival, named after the song by Carlos Santana, featured essayist and editor Rebecca Walker, whose memoir, Black, White and Jewish, recounts her childhood as the daughter of Alice Walker. The Mission’s participation in the festival underscored Mission efforts to share American experiences of diversity with Dutch audiences.

October 4, 2007. Utrecht Police hosts last pre-departure meeting and iftar for the participants of the Dutch Muslim Youth Project. The 'Muslim Youth Project' is an exchange program between the United States and the Netherlands. The program is meant for professionals working with islamic youth; the focus is integration. The group will travel to the U.S. on October 26, 2007.

October 4, 2007. A group of eighty Muslims and non Muslims, all younger than 30, joined Ambassador Roland Arnall for an Iftar dinner at his residence in The Hague. The mix of students, young professionals, members of the press, and members of the mission engaged in very lively conversations. This was the second annual Iftar hosted by Ambassador Arnall, and the third by the U.S. Embassy.

Third High Tech Connections Forum starts
The Forum is organized by the American Embassy in The Hague and the Dutch government. Ambassador Arnall was a keynote speaker and arranged this meeting for the Dutch with Governor Schwarzenegger in a strong show of support for furthering trade and investment between the United States and the Netherlands. Over 140 Dutch companies and 130 American companies came together to network and share experiences leading to business opportunities in the areas of nanotechnology, healthcare, and homeland security.

Embassy Officer attends Torah Dedication Ceremony in Maastricht
August 26, 2007. U.S. Embassy Political Counselor Andrew Schofer attended a Torah Dedication Ceremony at the Synagogue in Maastricht. This Torah scroll, discovered recently in the cellar of the Synagogue, was written and inscribed in memory of U.S. Private David Meyer Wald, who died in action on Yom Kipur, September 27, 1944. It was dedicated and donated to the Maastricht Jewish community by his parents, Hania and Zelig Wald, in 1945. It lay dormant for many years, but the Torah is now restored, and has been given an honorable place during a moving ceremony.

Representative Ed Pastor (Democrat - Arizona) led a delegation to the Netherlands, August 23-26, for discussions on Dutch approaches to energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, water management, and flood prevention. The trip included a visit to the Maeslantkering (storm surge barrier) near Rotterdam. Tax Reimbursement Agreement Signed
June 26, 2007 Strengthening our relationship with the Permanent Court of Arbitration, Ambassador Arnall and Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) Secretary-General Tjaco van den Hout met to sign a Tax Reimbursement Agreement.
The Agreement should assist the PCA in recruiting and retaining U.S. employees as it works to even the field by allowing reimbursement of U.S. taxes to PCA employees liable for U.S. taxes.

U.S. Government Combats Illegal Wildlife Trafficking and Protects Endangered Species
June 5, 2007 Assistant Secretary Claudia McMurray, who heads the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES) at the U.S. Department of State, spoke with journalists in The Hague about illegal wildlife trafficking and endangered species.

American Poet Mark Strand reads from Dutch-English collection of his works
May 22, 2007 American poet Mark Strand, Pulitzer Prize winner and former Poet Laureate of the U.S., read his poetry at the residence of U.S. Ambassador Roland E. Arnall.
The recently published Dutch-English book Gedichten Eten (Eating Poetry) contains translations of select poems by Mr. Strand. Dr. Wiljan van den Akker, professor of Dutch Literature, and Ms. Esther Jansma, poet and archeologist, worked in close collaboration with the poet to translate works for the bilingual edition.

Dutch-American Friendship Day Celebrated
April 19, 2007. More than 200 guests, including Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, were present at an event in the Rolzaal (Binnenhof) in The Hague to commemorate the fact that 225 years ago, on April 19 1782, John Adams was recognized by the Dutch as the first U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands.
During the event, remarks were made by Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, Ambassador Roland E. Arnall, Dr. Barbara Oomen from the Roosevelt Academy, and Mr. Russell Shorto, author of a book on New Amsterdam (Manhattan). There were also video messages from U.S. Congressmen Hoekstra and Van Hollen, sponsors of the resolution to establish an official Dutch-American Friendship Day on April 19.
Dutch School Children Ask Questions to U.S. Astronaut
April 10, 2007 Students of 14 Dutch Delta Researchers Schools asked questions via a radio contact to U.S. Astronaut Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria on the International Space Station.
The Delta Researchers Schools project is a human spaceflight project for Dutch primary schools. The aim of the project is to encourage schools to integrate science and technology into their curriculum, using human spaceflight as a theme. The project was set up by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, ESA and NASA. There are currently 26 primary schools participating in this project.

American Expert Discusses Preserving Iraqi Cultural Heritage
March 22, 2007 Corine Wegener, former Major in the U.S. Army Reserve and art curator, gave a series of lectures in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Leiden and The Hague, co-sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in The Hague, on the looting of the Iraq Museum and cultural property at war. She talked about her experiences in Baghdad in 2003, when she assisted the National Museum of Iraq in tracing back and safeguarding looted art from the museum. After her return to U.S. she founded the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield, which is part of an international organization that promotes the protection of cultural property during armed conflict and emergency response when needed.
U.S. Embassy strengthens ties with Dutch Black Business Women's Association
March 20, 2007 Senior Commercial Officer Sheryl Pinckney-Maas and Commercial Specialist Jennifer Ritfeld of the U.S. Commercial Service in The Hague hosted a lunch and seminar for the "Zwarte Zaken Vrouwen Nederland - ZZVN" (Dutch Black Business Women's Association). More than twenty female entrepreneurs from minority backgrounds exchanged strategies for gaining access to mainstream business networks and corporate boards in the Netherlands. They also discussed the difference in the challenges by American and Dutch businesswomen. The U.S. Commercial Service has worked closely with the ZZVN over the past two years, for example during the successfu February 2007 Women in Business Trade Mission to Amsterdam and Rotterdam. It was also an opportunity for the U.S. Commercial Service to brief the ZZVN members on the services that they provide to Dutch companies.

U.S. Judge Discusses Impact of Foreign Law on U.S. Courts
February 26, 2007 During his February 22-27 visit to the Netherlands, Judge John G. Koeltl, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of NewYork, visited the University of Utrecht where he lectured on "The use of foreign and international sources by American judges" to 65 law students and faculty. The judge answered questions about court jurisdiction, The Hague Convention, and the Alien Tort Statute. Judge Koeltl also participated in the "World Organization for Cross-Border Cooperation in Civil and Commercial Matters/Hague Conference on Private International Law." Furthermore, in The Hague the judge met with private international lawyers at the T.M.C. Asser Institute, as well as with the Director of the Council for the Judiciary.

U.S. Official Commemorates Nijmegen Bombing
February 22, 2007 Deputy Chief of Mission Chat Blakeman and Army Attache Col. Paul Calbos joined Mayor Thom de Graaf and the citizens of Nijmegen to remember and honor those who lost their lives in an accidental bombing by American pilots on that day in 1944. The Mayor, the Embassy representatives and others laid wreaths at a memorial park in Nijmegen to honor the nearly 800 people who perished. Speakers recalled the heroism shown by Dutch and American men and women during the Second World War and observed a moment of silence for all those who lost their lives during that epic struggle. New Tulip Named after George H.W. Bush at the Holland Flower Festival in Bovenkarspel
February 21, 2007 A new tulip named after George H.W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States, was christened at the Holland Flower Festival in Bovenkarspel. Roger Wentzel, the Agricultural Counselor from the embassy, was present at the official naming ceremony and had the honor of sprinkling champagne over the beautiful white tulips. The George H.W. Bush tulip was developed by the company New Tulip BV located in Bovenkarspel.

February 18, 2007 Dutch university students were named "Best Delegation" at the Harvard National Model United Nations, the oldest and largest model U.N. in the world. The Dutch student organization United Netherlands trained the group, and as part of their preparations, the group visited the American Embassy on February 2, 2007. They met with Ambassador Arnall and received briefings from Embassy officers on topics ranging from international peace and security, to economic and social development, and human rights.

February 5, 2007. The American Embassy hosted the "Women in Business" Mission, where 10 participating U.S. companies were looking for business contacts/partnerships in the Netherlands. Embassy Official Speaks about the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
January 28, 2007 Deputy Chief of Mission Chat Blakeman addresses the Dr. Martin Luther King Tribute and Dinner in Wassenaar. The American, Dutch and international guests enjoyed a program of moving personal speeches, poetry and song to commemorate and celebrate the life of the great civil rights leader. Dr. King's birthday on January 15 is a federal holiday. Dr. King would have been 78 this year.

Ambassador Arnall hosts Dutch Youth
January 24, 2007 Ambassador Roland E. Arnall met more than 170 representatives of Dutch student associations and youth wings of political parties at a reception held in his residence in The Hague. After his opening remarks, the Ambassador engaged in a lively discussion on current events in U.S. politics.
New Emergency Passports For American Citizens
January 17, 2007 Today the U.S. Consulate General in Amsterdam began issuing a new generation of emergency passport to American citizens. The Emergency Photo-Digitized Passport (EPDP) represents the latest advance in the security of the U.S. passport. The twelve page passport enables American citizens to continue their international travel after a passport has been either lost or stolen outside the United States. (more)
