Tax Reimbursement Agreement Signed

June 26, 2007 Strengthening our relationship with the Permanent Court of Arbitration, Ambassador Arnall and Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) Secretary-General Tjaco van den Hout met to sign a Tax Reimbursement Agreement. The Agreement should assist the PCA in recruiting and retaining U.S. employees as it works to even the field by allowing reimbursement of U.S. taxes to PCA employees liable for U.S. taxes.

Ambassador Arnall visits Dordrecht

May 31, 2007 Ambassador Arnall gave the opening speech entitled "The Future of the United States as a nation of immigrants" before members of Dordrecht's Rotary Club Thuredrecht. The event was part of the rotary club's theme for this year "Ready for the Future?" ("Klaar voor de toekomst?") and was held in the historical Statenzaal. Attendees included the Mayor of Dordrecht, Mr. R.J.G. Bandell, Alderman D.A. van Steensel, members of Dordrecht's three other rotary clubs and the town's business community.

May 27, 2007 During a moving ceremony, Ambassador Arnall commemorated Memorial Day in Margraten. He said: "The precious lives and the memory of our soldiers, who lie here and elsewhere, will always be a testament to the sacrifices they made and to the freedoms which we enjoy. Standing here today with you, I bow my head in reverence, I close my eyes in solitude, and I listen to the gentle tears we shed in remembering and celebrating our soldiers, our heroes." Full Remarks

American Poet Mark Strand reads from Dutch-English collection of his works

May 22, 2007. American poet Mark Strand, Pulitzer Prize winner and former Poet Laureate of the U.S., read his poetry at the residence of U.S. Ambassador Roland E. Arnall. The recently published Dutch-English book Gedichten Eten (Eating Poetry) contains translations of select poems by Mr. Strand. Dr. Wiljan van den Akker, professor of Dutch Literature, and Ms. Esther Jansma, poet and archeologist, worked in close collaboration with the poet to translate works for the bilingual edition.

Dutch-American Friendship Day Celebrated

April 19, 2007. More than 200 guests, including Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, were present at an event in the Rolzaal (Binnenhof) in The Hague to commemorate the fact that 225 years ago, on April 19 1782, John Adams was recognized by the Dutch as the first U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands. During the event, remarks were made by Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, Ambassador Roland E. Arnall, Dr. Barbara Oomen from the Roosevelt Academy, and Mr. Russell Shorto, author of a book on New Amsterdam (Manhattan). There were also video messages from U.S. Congressmen Hoekstra and Van Hollen, sponsors of the resolution to establish an official Dutch-American Friendship Day on April 19.  Ambassador's remarks

Civil Rights in the United States Explored

March 13, 2007 Ambassador Arnall displays the book A People and a Nation: A History of the United States presented to him by Dr. William Tuttle Jr., Fulbright scholar and John Adams Chair in American History at the University of Nijmegen. Dr. Tuttle, Professor of American Studies at the University of Kansas and an expert on the civil rights movement in the United States, addressed an audience in a follow up to the Diversity Dialogues conference the Embassy hosted in November 2006. Ambassador Arnall meets with Dutch model UN team

February 18, 2007 Dutch university students were named "Best Delegation" at the Harvard National Model United Nations, the oldest and largest model U.N. in the world. The Dutch student organization United Netherlands trained the group, and as part of their preparations, the group visited the American Embassy on February 2, 2007. They met with Ambassador Arnall and received briefings from Embassy officers on topics ranging from international peace and security, to economic and social development, and human rights.

Ambassador Arnall hosts Dutch Youth

January 24, 2007 - Ambassador Roland E. Arnall met more than 170 representatives of Dutch student associations and youth wings of political parties at a reception held in his residence in The Hague. After his opening remarks, the Ambassador engaged in a lively discussion on current events in U.S. politics.
